Minnesota Film Critics Alliance Member Profile: Melinda Lavine

Melinda Lavine is a features reporter at the Duluth News Tribune. She regularly writes about movies, including reviews. She previously worked for the Grand Forks Herald.

How long have you been producing content about movies?

Nine years.

Where do you live and/or produce content about movies?

Duluth, Minnesota

What type of content do you produce about movies?

Movie reviews today. I used to co-host a weekly web show about film and a blog about TV and movies.

What motivated you to create content about movies?

I’ve always thought deeply about movies, how it reflects our stories and emotions back to us. I wanted to study criticism and work out my thoughts in a form that starts a conversation with others about their interpretations.

What inspired your love of movies?

I grew up on film. It’s a wonderful escape and has always been one of the earlier forms of connection to a larger world for me. It was also a way of bonding with my family, sharing solace, adventure or sorrow through a filmmaker’s vision.

What do you enjoy most about living in Minnesota ?

Our access to nature.

What is your favorite movie theater in Minnesota?

Zinema 2, an independent film house in Duluth. It shows movies on the big screen that our city wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

What are some of your favorite movies from the past year (2019)?

“The Farewell,” “Joker,” “Us,” “Always Be My Maybe.”

What are your favorite movies set in Minnesota?

“Fargo,” “Grumpy Old Men,” “Virginia Minnesota.”
