Alliance Lately: Issue No. 69

A new year has started but MNFCA members aren’t quite done with 2022 yet.

Over the last few weeks of the year, Minnesota critics spent time reviewing new blockbusters such as the “Avatar” sequel, and award contenders like “Babylon.” Check out what they had to think on those movies and much more in this Alliance Lately.

Eli Brau

At A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed new releases “Christmas Bloody Christmas,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Bardo,” “The Apology,” “Bullet Train,” “Faults,” “Babylon,” “Glass Onion” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

Brian Eggert

For Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed new films “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” “White Noise,” “The Whale” and “Living.” He also wrote about 1986’s “Top Gun” and 1995’s “Strange Days.”

Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl

On recent Horror Rewind episodes, Florence and Hafdahl discussed the new Shudder picture “A Wounded Fawn” and the Christmas thriller “Violent Night.”

Hunter Friesen

At the Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed new movies “Babylon,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “The Pale Blue Eye.”

Jay Gabler

For the Duluth News Tribune, Gabler wrote about the recent release “Tar.” He also wrote about “The Mighty Ducks,” which he watched for the first time.

Kyle Goethe

At his site, Goethe reviewed the 2022 release “My Policeman.” He was also joined by fellow MNFCA member Nicholas Palodichuk for the series Kyle and Nick on Film to discuss 1983’s “Trading Places,” 1997’s “The Sweet Hereafter” and 2015’s “Krampus.” They also reviewed “Bones and All,” as well as “She Said” from 2022.

Paul McGuire Grimes

For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed recent releases “Women Talking,” “The Whale,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon” and “Pearl.” He also appeared on Twin Cities Live on Dec. 16.

Matt Hambidge

At News on the Couch, Hambidge reviewed new films “Babylon,” “Living,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.”

Danny Haslach

Haslach’s podcast Film Bird had a new episode predicting who will be the best directors over the next 20 years.

Frank Lee

For the Brainerd Dispatch, Lee wrote about new films “The Menu” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.”

Matthew Liedke

At his site, Liedke reviewed recent releases “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Glass Onion,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio,” “The Whale” and “Babylon.”

He also wrote a piece about award ceremonies and their college football bowl counterparts.

Ruth Maramis

On FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed new films “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Glass Onion,” “Spirited” and “Babylon.” She also wrote a list of five essential Jane Austen adaptations, which actors would be best for a biopic on poet Robert Burns and her picks for best breakout performers from the past year.

Mark McPherson

At his site, McPherson reviewed the new release “Babylon.” He also reviewed “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” “Living” and Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” on his YouTube channel.
