Alliance Lately: Issue No. 70

January can sometimes be a rough month at the movies considering what Hollywood usually puts out, but 2023 started off alright.

Many MNFCA members gave positive reviews on recent releases “M3gan” and “Plane,” find out what they thought below. Also find out what they thought of more award contenders and much more.

Here’s what the Alliance has been up to lately.

Joe Botten

On his site, Botten reviewed new films “Living,” “Alice, Darling” and “Sorry About the Demon.”

Eli Brau

At his site, A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed the films “Decision to Leave,” “White Noise,” “The Menu,” “Elvis,” “M3gan,” “Sick” and “This Place Rules.” He also ranked Wes Anderson’s 10 films.

Brian Eggert

On Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed recent releases “M3gan,” “One Fine Morning,” “Eo,” “A Man Called Otto,” “Plane,” “Women Talking,” “Sick” and “When You Finish Saving the World.”

He also wrote 1960’s “The Virgin Spring,” 1990’s “Blue Steel” and 1991’s “Point Break.”

Hunter Friesen

At the Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed “A Man Called Otto” and “80 for Brady.” He also listed his picks for the best Hollywood screenwriters, previewed the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and wrote an essay about how the Oscars would have looked different if each year there were 10 Best Picture nominees.

Joseph Froemming

For his series the Joe-Down, Froemming reviewed 1981’s crime drama “Thief.”

Jay Gabler

At the Duluth News Tribune, Gabler wrote a recommendations piece about award contenders.

Kyle Goethe and Nicholas Palodichuk

For their YouTube series Kyle and Nick on Film, Goethe and Palodichuk reviewed 2022 films “Women Talking,” “Decision to Leave” and “Bros.”

Paul McGuire Grimes

For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “A Man Called Otto” and “M3gan.” He also appeared on Twin Cities Live on Jan. 6.

Matt Hambidge

At News From the Couch, Hambidge reviewed the new action film “Plane.”

Danny Haslach

A new episode of Haslach’s podcast FilmBird focused on the new mystery “Glass Onion.”

Eric Houston

For his series Bad Movie Bros, Houston reviewed 1985’s drama “Turf Turf.”

Frank Lee

At the Brainerd Dispatch, Lee wrote about “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “M3gan” and “A Man Called Otto.”

Matthew Liedke

On his site, Liedke reviewed “A Man Called Otto,” “M3gan,” “Triangle of Sadness” and “Plane.”

Ruth Maramis

At her site FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed “Women Talking,” “Plane” and “Saint Omer.” She also wrote about her reaction to the Golden Globes.

Mark McPherson

On his site, McPherson reviewed the new action flick “Plane.”

Frank Stanko

For his continued look back at films from 1998, Stanko wrote about “There’s Something About Mary” for The Pop Culturists.

Tyler Strandberg

At the site Cinefied, Strandberg reviewed the animated feature “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.”
