Alliance Lately: Issue No. 76

Memorial Day weekend means the first month of the summer movie season has wrapped up.

New releases ranged from the Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” to the action sequel “Fast X.” Also coming out was the live action “Little Mermaid” from Disney.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 75

The summer movie season is underway with the release of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and MNFCA has the new film covered.

Several members of the MNFCA published reviews on the third film in the series from the MCU, but that wasn’t all. Minnesota critics also reviewed new releases such as “Sisu,” “Chevalier” and “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.”

MNFCA at the MSPIFF 2023

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Film Society recently concluded its annual festival, which ran from April 13-27.

The Society has held the MSP International Film Festival for 42 years. This year’s edition had nearly 200 films from all around the world.

Watching several of the films were members of the Minnesota Film Critics Alliance. Members from the metro area watched festival-shown movies including “Dreamin’ Wild,” “Showing Up” and much more.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 74

April is nearly done but spring hasn’t quite sprung yet in Minnesota, with the state experiencing some late snow and cold.

No issue for Minnesota critics, though, who kept busy inside theaters seeing the latest Hollywood has to offer. MNFCA members reviewed the likes of “Renfield,” “Air,” and much more.

Many also attended the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. That event concludes Thursday, so keep an eye out for a release on the MNFCA’s coverage on the MSP IFF.

Alliance Lately: Issue No. 73

The month of March had plenty of new films released both in theaters and on streaming platforms and Minnesota film critics kept up with all of them.

Members of the MNFCA reviewed bigger releases including “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” and “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” as well as smaller dramas such as “The Lost King” and “A Good Person.” Check out what the Alliance has been up to lately.

MNFCA Predicts the Oscars

The Minnesota Film Critics Alliance announced their awards late last month, and now it’s the Academy’s turn.

Ahead of the Oscars broadcast tonight, several members of the MNFCA have predicted what movies will be victorious tonight. Many also shared which nominee they want to win.

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ wins 5 MNFCA awards including Best Picture

The multi-universe dramatic comedy “Everything Everywhere All At Once” was the big winner in the 2023 Minnesota Film Critics Alliance Awards.

The film earned five awards from the MNFCA, including the prize of Best Picture. The only other film winning more than one award this year was “The Batman,” taking Best Music and Best Cinematography.

The rest of the wins were spread out among several of 2022’s top films. For example, “The Banshees of Inisherin” earned Best Screenplay and “Women Talking” won Best Ensemble.

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ leads MNFCA noms with 11

“Everything Everywhere All At Once” earned the most nominations for the 2023 Minnesota Film Critics Alliance Awards with 11.

This included selections for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Right behind “Everything Everywhere All At Once” was “The Banshees of Inisherin” with 10 nominations, which also received nods in Picture, Director and Screenplay.

“Tár” also had a strong showing with seven nominations, followed by “The Batman with six. Others receiving several nominations were “Elvis” and “Women Talking, with both films earning five.

The award winners will be announced Saturday, February 25.

MNFCA’s 2022 in Review

With another year of reviewing movies finished, Minnesota film critics have evaluated what they saw and many have ranked the best 2022 had to offer.
