Minnesota Film Critics Alliance Member Profile: Tyler Strandberg

Tyler Strandberg’s work can be found in many places.

In addition to publishing media rankings on his own site, he writes reviews for InSession Film and hosts a podcast dedicated to the critically acclaimed series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

Here’s more about Tyler in his own words.

How long have you been producing content about movies?

I’ve been ranking films I’ve seen as a hobby since about 2017, podcasting since 2019, and writing reviews more professionally since 2021

Where do you live and/or produce content about movies?

I’m a Minnesota native who currently resides in Minneapolis. I’ve had my work published in a variety of places, including my personal hobby website, multiple podcasts, as well as various websites such as InSession Film, Awards Radar, and Next Best Picture

What type of content do you produce about movies?

I rate and rank every single film I’ve seen on my personal blog, as well as write reviews and podcasts.

What motivated you to create content about movies?

Around my late teens/early adulthood I was beginning to get sick of the large blockbusters as the only form of movies that were available to see.

They certainly have their own entertainment purposes, but I wanted a bit of variety that my local small town movie theater wasn’t providing for me at the time. I looked to the Oscars for help and have been invested and interested ever since.

What inspired your love of movies?

“La La Land.” For most of my life, I never really had a “favorite movie”. When I saw “La La Land” in theaters I fell head over heels, and I’ve been chasing the feeling that film has given me ever since.

What do you enjoy most about living in Minnesota?

I love the amount of nature that’s so readily available around us. Even living in the city, I feel like I’m super close to a weekend getaway, or a place to go hiking and escape everything.

What is your favorite movie theater in Minnesota?

I must admit, I have the AMC A-List and I’m all about saving money, so I haven’t been to many arthouse theaters in the area. My go-to AMC is the Southdale one if that counts for anything?

What are some of your favorite movies from the past year (2021)?

“Dune” absolutely blew me away, and I’m so excited for Part 2. However, I’m such a sucker for “Luca.” I cry everytime I watch it without fail, and the gay metaphor means so much to me.

It’s such a pure, innocent, and beautiful depiction on young gay crushes. Melts my heart every single time.

What are your favorite movies set in Minnesota?

The first movie I remember watching that was set in Minnesota was “New In Town” with Renee Zelleweger. I remember they used the New Ulm sign and everything. But as cliche as it is, my favorite set in Minnesota has to be “Fargo.”

Where can people find your work?

You can find my personal ranking of movies on my personal blog, Tyler TV Review, and my main reviews are published on InSession Film.

What are your Social Media accounts?

You can find me on Twitter, Instagram, or Letterboxd.
