Alliance Lately: Issue No. 77

As usual, the summer movie season has been full of action and MNFCA members have been all over the latest genre films getting released.

Recently, Minnesota critics reviewed “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and “The Flash.” Movie coverage didn’t end there, though, as members covered plenty of other new, smaller releases, and revisited older pictures.

Here’s what the Alliance has been up to lately.

Joe Botten

At his site, Botten reviewed the Robert Englund documentary “Dreams and Nightmares.”

Eli Brau

For A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed new releases “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Little Mermaid,” “BlackBerry,” “The Old Way,” “Master Gardener” and “Saint Omer.”

Brian Eggert

At Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed new films “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Daliland,” “Flamin’ Hot,” “The Flash,” “Blue Jean,” “Asteroid City,” “Elemental” and “Past Lives.” He also wrote about 1997’s “Eve’s Bayou” and 2001’s “Ocean’s Eleven.”

Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl

On their podcast Horror Rewind, Florence and Hafdahl discussed the convention Horror on Main, as well as 2023 releases “M3gan,” “Evil Dead Rise,” “Renfield” and “Scream.”

Hunter Friesen

At Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed new films “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Zone of Interest,” “The Flash” and “Asteroid City.” He also published a ranking of all the pictures he watched at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as a ranking every Spider-Man movie.

Jay Gabler

For the Duluth News Tribune, Gabler wrote a piece about film projects made with local, northern Minnesota talent.

Kyle Goethe and Nicholas Palodichuk

For their series Kyle and Nick on Film, Goethe and Palodichuk discussed 1940’s “The Great Dictator,” 1943’s “The Ghost Ship,” 1953’s “The Big Heat,” 1988’s “Tucker: The Man and his Dream” and 2013’s “Out of the Furnace.”

Paul McGuire Grimes

Grimes reviewed new films “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Flamin’ Hot” and the documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” for his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies.

Matt Hambidge

On his site News From the Couch, Hambidge reviewed the new “Spider-Man” film “Across the Spider-Verse.”

Danny Haslach

On the FilmBird podcast, Haslach discussed the “Spider-Man” sequel “Across the Spider-Verse.”

Eric Houston

Houston reviewed the 1989 film “Arena” for his series Bad Movie Bros. He also released a video essay about the career of film and television actress Diana Rigg for North Metro TV.

Frank Lee

Covering movies for Forum Communications, Lee wrote about new releases “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “The Little Mermaid.”

Matthew Liedke

At his site, Liedke reviewed “The Little Mermaid,” “You Hurt My Feelings” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

Mark McPherson

For his site, McPherson reviewed the new “Transformers” movie “Rise of the Beasts.” He also reviewed “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “The Flash” on his YouTube channel. Additionally, he published a video essay about 1984’s “Revenge of the Nerds.”

Tyler Strandberg

At his site, Strandberg reviewed the “Spider-Man” sequel “Across the Spider-Verse.”
