The Alliance Lately: Issue No. 88

The Golden Globe nominations were announced this week and several of the contenders were reviewed recently by the MNFCA.

From “Poor Things” to the animated feature “The Boy and the Heron,” Minnesota critics are all over the award season flicks. They’ve reviewed much more than those, though, also covering new releases such as “Saltburn” and “Wonka.”

Check out what the Alliance has been up to lately.

Joe Botten

At his site, Botten reviewed new films “American Symphony,” “LA Syndicaliste,” “Silent Night,” “Candy Cane Lane,” “We Live Here: The Midwest,” “Waitress: The Musical,” “Our Son,” “Leave the World Behind,” “The Sacrifice Game” and “Lord of Misrule.”

He also wrote several reports on the Toronto International Film Festival. Find parts 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Eli Brau

At A Cinephile’s Corner, Brau reviewed new films “Saltburn,” “Fingernails,” “Napoleon,” “Poor Things,” “All of Us Strangers,” “The Boy and the Heron” and “Leave the World Behind.”

He also reviewed 2007’s “Zodiac” and ranked the “Hunger Games” films.

Brian Eggert

On Deep Focus Review, Eggert reviewed new films “My Last Best Friend,” “Eileen,” “Poor Things,” “Origin,” “Perfect Days,” “Ferrari,” “Wonka,” “The Boy and the Heron” and “American Fiction.” He also wrote about 1970’s “Even Dwarfs Started Small.”

Hunter Friesen

For The Cinema Dispatch, Friesen reviewed “Poor Things,” “Eileen,” “Freud’s Last Session” and “Wonka.” He also published an awards season update column.

Jay Gabler

For the Duluth News Tribune, Gabler reviewed the Hallmark film “Rescuing Christmas,” which was filmed in the Twin Ports community. He also covered a special screening of the film in Duluth which featured members of the production.

Kyle Goethe

At GOAT Film Reviews, Goethe reviewed the new sports film “Next Goal Wins.”

Paul McGuire Grimes

For his series Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Grimes reviewed new films “Priscilla,” “It’s a Wonderful Knife,” “Candy Cane Lane,” “Poor Things,” “Leave the World Behind,” “Wonka,” “All of Us Strangers” and “Our Son.” He also appeared on the Dec. 1 edition of ABC affiliate KSTP’s Twin Cities Live.

Eric Houston

On his Bad Movie Bros series, Houston reviewed the “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” film.

Matthew Liedke

At his site, Liedke reviewed new pictures “Napoleon,” “May December,” “Wish” and “Saltburn.”

Ruth Maramis

For FlixChatter, Maramis reviewed 2023 films “Saltburn,” “Jules” and “Maestro.” She also shared her thoughts on the Golden Globe nominations.

Mark McPherson

At his site, McPherson reviewed new movies “Dream Scenario,” “May December,” “Poor Things” and “Godzilla Minus One.”

Nicholas Palodichuk

For the series Kyle and Nick on Film, Palodichuk was joined by Goethe to discuss 1943’s “The Leopard Man,” 1969’s “True Grit” and 1985’s “Silver Bullet.”

Tyler Strandberg

On the site InSession Film, Strandberg reviewed the new Netflix drama “May December.”

T.A. Wardrope

For Twin Cities Geek, Wardrope reviewed the new “Godzilla” film, “Minus One.”
